When we have been practising mindfulness for some time we begin to recognise that the source of our sense of aliveness, connection, ease and relaxation is right under our nose. While the breath may be ever present we tend to underestimate its importance as a sane refuge in a frantic world. During this 8-week course we will come to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the breath as set out in the text known as the Anapanasati Sutta. While the breath is central to this text it also includes skilful ways of relating to our feelings, emotions and thoughts and of deepening our capacity to lead a reflective and creative life.
This ancient Buddhist text underpins all the mindfulness trainings that have become commonplace in our secular culture over the past decades. When Thich Nhat Hanh, the world-renowned meditation teacher, was introduced to this text as a young man he recounts ‘I felt like the happiest man alive’! I too have found this text to be an ongoing source of immense practical help and deep inspiration. It offers clear and practical instructions from the beginning practices of mindful breathing right up to the challenging and complex practice of ‘letting go’.
If you have an established practice of mindfulness or want to develop a regular practice then you might like to join me on this 8-week adventure. (This course is not for those new to mindfulness.) The course will be a combination of theory (exploring the actual ancient text) and practices. There will be recommended home practice of 30 minutes per day.
