Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Professional Training Programme

MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Start Date: September 2023

This highly respected and well-established training has, for 30 years, provided a thorough and structured training in the theory and practice of Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. The course has evolved from a three-year Diploma Course in 1993 delivered by the IICAPP to a four-year Clinical Training Programme in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, including a two-year Master of Science (MSc) in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. Irish Institute of Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IICAPP) is a fully accredited training institute accredited by the Irish Council for Psychotherapy and the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP).

The M.Sc. in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy provides the first two years of a four-year training, in association with IICAPP, for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy trainees, training towards an accredited qualification in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The course consists of personal Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, theoretical foundations, and clinical practice and supervision as well as a two-year Infant Observation which facilitates the development of a clinical capacity as well as giving students an opportunity to observe object relations from early infancy.

The theoretical foundations are based on the work of Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, Wilfred Bion, and the Independent Tradition, as well as contemporary thinkers in the object relations tradition.

This training places significant emphasis on experiential learning and the acquisition of specific skills for working with clients. Upon completion of the mandatory clinical hours, students will meet the requirements for accreditation with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP) and the European Association of Psychotherapy (EAP).  For further information – MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (Trinity College Dublin).
